About

I am a historian of Modern China, specialised in the history of science and medicine, as well as gender and sexuality.

Since 2019 I have been Senior Lecturer in Chinese History and Society at the School of History and Heritage, University of Lincoln. I was Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the Department of History, University of Liverpool from 2014 to 2019. Before that I was a Research Fellow at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

I studied at the University of Cambridge, and did Natural Sciences (BA 2003) and History and Philosophy of Science (MPhil 2004, PhD 2010).

I am writing a book about what people thought of Chinese sexuality. I am also researching acupuncture and the British Sinologist Joseph Needham (1900-1995).

Outside of the classroom, my preoccupations include 1980s Cantonese pop music, retro-videogaming, and most recently, growing thistles.
